Discover More Information On Standing Ovation Serviceberry
The Standing Ovation serviceberry is a native American plant that can thrive throughout the United States. In the spring, the shrub will bloom with an extensive range of white flowers that are reminiscent of dogwoods. The summer season allows the bush to develop edible berries with a taste similar to blueberries. These fruits can be used in preserves, eaten fresh, dried like raisins, or pressed for juice. Once the fall season comes around, the round leaves will start to change into red and orange hues to give your landscape a spectacular autumn show.
Plant Attributes
The Standing Ovation separates itself from other serviceberries with its beautiful shape and form. Many serviceberries are usually large shrubs or small trees. This version of the serviceberry is almost oval, and it grows upright to 15 feet. With its height, this shrub could be called a small tree. Its white flowers will show up in the early spring, and it features deep purple berries towards the end of the season. The forest green foliage will emerge in the spring as a reddish color. Since this is a larger plant, it will make a great addition as a windbreak or hedge.
Landscape Use
This multi-stemmed deciduous shrub features a columnar, upright growth habit. The delicate leaf texture will set itself apart from the other plants in your landscape. The Standing Ovation serviceberry is a low maintenance shrub, and it should be pruned in the late winter when the threat of cold winter has passed. This is an excellent choice for those who want to attract birds to their property. The Standing Ovation serviceberry is not attractive to deer. This shrub would make an excellent addition to a woodland garden or be used as a screen or hedge.
Planting & Care
Your new shrub needs to be planted in a hole that is twice the root system’s size. Depending on the local soil conditions, you might need to add compost or topsoil as backfill soil. However, you must be careful about your backfill’s sources. Some products can contain too much moisture and cause the Standing Ovation’s roots to rot. A layer of topsoil or compost will feed those younger roots as they spread through the nutrient-rich soil. For that reason, you need to use existing soil that is not compacted or hard. The main reason that a Standing Ovation will die from transplanting is that the plant was placed too deep into the ground. You should never put the shrub in a hole deeper than the soil line.
After you have planted the Standing Ovation, it will need deep watering. You should not rush the process as the soil needs to soak up the moisture. The plant must be checked for the first week if it needs additional water. The shrub should never be allowed to have its roots dry up. After the first week, you should continue to check on soil moisture levels until the shrub has established in your landscape.
The Standing Ovation serviceberry does well in full sun to partial shade. You should not allow the shrub to dry out as it prefers to grow in average to moist conditions. This shrub will grow up to 15 feet tall, and it has a spread of four feet. The Standing Ovation serviceberry’s clearance is about two feet from the ground, and it is considered a leggy shrub. However, this shrub will make a great plant to use under power lines. This serviceberry grows at an average rate, and you can expect it to live for about 30 years. Since it is considered a self-pollinating shrub, you will not need a second tree to develop fruit. This shrub does not require a specific soil pH or type, and it is tolerant of urban pollution.
