Diamond Rouge Panicle Hydrangea with red flowers

Discover More Information On Diamond Rouge® Panicle Hydrangea

Diamond Rouge® Panicle Hydrangea has abundant, long lasting, rounded flower heads that start white and progress to pink, intense raspberry red, and finally wine red. Flowers start blooming in July and take on red coloration earlier in the season than other pink panicle hydrangeas, with fall color at its best when night temperatures are 10 degrees cooler than day temperatures. Diamond Rouge® is a mid-size hydrangea, working beautifully as focal point or small hedge. In production, this variety benefits from multiple prunes to produce strong stems. Bred by Jean Renault in France.

Plant Attributes

The Diamond Rouge Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Rendia') is a stunning deciduous shrub known for its spectacular, long-lasting flower panicles that undergo a breathtaking color transformation. Initially blooming with pristine white flowers, the panicles gradually shift to pink and eventually deepen to a rich, ruby red as the season progresses.

This vibrant display typically begins in mid-summer and continues through autumn, providing an impressive show in any garden. The plant itself is relatively easy to care for, thriving in full sun to partial shade and well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Diamond Rouge Panicle Hydrangea can reach a mature size of 6-8 feet tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for borders, hedges, or as a standalone specimen plant. Pruning is advised in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

The hardiness of this variety (USDA zones 3-8) makes it adaptable to a wide range of climates, ensuring its popularity among gardeners for its striking appearance and low maintenance requirements.

Planting & Care

Planting and caring for Diamond Rouge Panicle Hydrangea is relatively straightforward, as it is a low-maintenance plant that can thrive in various conditions. Here are some planting and care tips to help your hydrangea flourish:

  1. Site Selection: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade, ensuring the plant receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Diamond Rouge Hydrangea can tolerate various light conditions, but more sun exposure typically results in stronger stems and more vibrant blooms.
  2. Soil Preparation: The plant prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (between 6.0 and 7.0). Amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, to improve its structure and fertility before planting.
  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball of your hydrangea. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole with the amended soil, gently firming it down around the root ball. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.
  4. Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch, like shredded bark or pine needles, around the base of the plant. This will help to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a consistent soil temperature.
  5. Watering: Diamond Rouge Hydrangea requires consistent moisture, especially during the first few years after planting. Water the plant deeply and thoroughly once a week, or more frequently during hot, dry periods. Ensure that the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot.
  6. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (such as a 10-10-10 formula) in early spring, following the manufacturer's instructions. Alternatively, you can use an organic fertilizer, like compost or well-rotted manure, to promote healthy growth.
  7. Pruning: Prune the Diamond Rouge Hydrangea in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and cut back the remaining stems to a height of 12-24 inches above the ground, depending on the desired size and shape of the plant. This will encourage vigorous growth and an abundance of blooms.
  8. Pest and Disease Management: While generally resistant to pests and diseases, it is essential to monitor the plant for any signs of issues such as aphids, spider mites, or powdery mildew. Employ preventative measures and treat problems promptly with appropriate organic or chemical controls, as needed.

By following these planting and care guidelines, you can ensure that your Diamond Rouge Panicle Hydrangea thrives, providing stunning color and visual interest in your garden for years to come.
